Project PRISM

Recently (July) it was announced that the NSA has been data-mining social networks and other online companies and extracting videos, photos, emails, documents and more. Some companies agreed to and have freely given the government access to everything you have posted (and continue to post) onto their servers. The government says they are using the data to find and collect evidence on terrorists and people involved with espionage or other illegal activities.

What do you think?

Explosive Detection Techniques Can Identify Counterfeit Drugs

The technology used in bomb detection has another beneficial use; it can identify counterfeit and substandard drugs which pose a major threat to public health and safety.

Nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy (NQR) utilizes harmless radio waves to scan the chemical structure or bonds of prescription pills to make sure they do not contain substances that should not be present. Harmful substances like rat poison or even higher dosages of the active ingredients in the drug can be fatal if ingested; which are commonly found in prescription drugs manufactured in developing countries who want to churn out large amounts of drugs as inexpensively as possible.

The NQR technique is simple, inexpensive and highly effective. All one would have to do is place a sample of the batch, with or without its final packaging, into the device and the tester will know whether or not the drug was genuine and could safely be administered for human consumption. The NQR device can easily scan through materials like glass, cardboard, plastic and wood.

Explosive Detection Techniques

Explosive detection is a non-destructive process to determine whether something contains explosive materials, these inspections are commonly used at airports. There are quite a few ways officials inspect packages for explosives, they use dogs, mechanical scent detection, spectrometers, x-rays and neutron activation machines.

In the field, specially trained dogs are used to identify the scents of several common explosive materials and notify their handlers when they do. Dogs are perfect for this line of work since they have sensitive noses and the chosen dogs are rigorously trained by certified handlers. These dogs are very effective; however their usefulness degrades a bit if they become tired or too bored.

Mechanical scent detection machines can pick up the trace signatures for various explosive materials with a quick swab of the item and analysis can be completed in less than a minute. Spectrometers utilize UV lights to measure the residue left from explosive materials. X-ray machines pick up explosive devices based on the items density. Neutron activation machines bombard the suspect item with neutrons to read the gamma radiation decay signatures to determine the chemical composition of the item in question. Explosive materials have very similar ratios of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, which the machines are able to easily detect.

Mechanical means were developed for more accurate and much faster detection of explosives for use in more controlled environments. A lot of these techniques are not portable, like the dogs are, and are used more commonly for border patrol or airport security.

Happy Presidents’ Day! 2013

President’s Day is the day we celebrate the birthdays of the two greatest Presidents in our nation’s history – George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

This President’s Day take a few moments to reflect on all that these great men have done for us, for the people, for this country.

Enjoy this day.

Be good to your fellow man. Be safe.

Veterans Day : 2012

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”

~Elmer Davis

On this Veterans Day, and always, remember to honor our military veterans. Without them, where would we all be? They have sacrificed a great many things to keep our lives free and safe in this great nation.

Veterans Day

I would also like to add a special Veteran’s Day thank you to an old boss and mentor of mine. He was a Vietnam Veteran, a small business owner in Ventura, a husband,a father, a mentor and a friend… he passed away the first weekend in September 2012 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Over the last 10 years I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to get to know him and his family. He was a wonderful man and is sorely missed. RIP Dan and thank you for your service to our country and the impact you had on my life.

Please take a few minutes today to remember those who have fought and died for the freedoms and liberties we all enjoy as Americans. Throughout our history – and still today – brave men and women sacrifice themselves and their needs for the greater needs, safety and freedoms of the American people. Remember and honor them, today and always.
